Oral health affects many things in your body

There is a mouth- body connection. Your mouth is a gateway to your body. Often, our oral health can serve as a first indicator for early signs and symptoms of disease. An unhealthy mouth may increase your risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and pre-term birth.

“If you don’t brush and floss regularly, harmful bacteria can build up along your gumline, creating an unhealthy environment. This harmful bacteria is a source of gum infection (gingivitis). If left untreated can lead to more serious condition, periodontal disease. Recently, research has shown there may be a link between gum infections and cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled diabetes and preterm,” said our Dental Hygienist, Adriene Defrancesco, RDH.

If we make the resolution to take care of our oral health, it will help us take care of our overall health in the future. Its a reminder that brushing and flossing are more important than you think!

Not only does your oral hygiene improve your overall health it can improve your confidence and self-esteem.

Having happy healthy teeth can improve your over all self-esteem. When you are happy with the way your teeth look you are more likely to smile. The more you smile the more confidence you can have. Not only will your smile give you confidence it will rub off on others along the way and they may smile as well. You might not have thought of your smile affecting others, but it sure does. A smile is a powerful tool. When you give a genuine smile to another person they are interpreting that as you feel they are a likable or a pleasant person. Your smile might give someone a positive attitude today. So, smile more!

This is one to be sure you add to your resolution – FLOSSING!

It’s easy and you are already most likely adopting some of these routines. While some New Years resolutions may take up a lot of your time this is an easy one to add to your everyday routine. Simply brushing your teeth after each meal will greatly improve your oral health and this is any easy way to remember. We recommend a soft bristled tooth brush or an electric toothbrush. Costco has great toothbrushes you can purchase here – (https://www.costco.com/oral-care.html). It’s also important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. This is important as your toothbrush can really wear down. Be sure you are brushing all the way down to your gums and your tongue to remove all lingering bacteria.

Make this part of your everyday routine. At least right before bed, this is a great time to remove any bacteria between your teeth before you hit the pillow. Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth. This is a great way to get any bacteria that your tooth brush couldn’t reach. We also recommend looking into a water flosser. These do not take place of flossing, but they are a great way to reach any tight spots you can’t seem to reach. If you want to keep your teeth in the long run you better start flossing like a boss.

We recommend doing your cleaning at least twice a year. Depending on your hygiene habits you might have to see a hygienist more often, but regular oral hygiene check-ups are highly recommended.
